At the association’s annual general meeting, board member, Allan Devlin (Secret Harbour Golf Club, WA) was elected unopposed.
“Devlin replaces Jeff Gambin (Gold Coast-Burleigh Golf Club), who stood down after nine years on the board, including the past four as president. Bryce Strachan, from Pambula-Merimbula Golf Club, NSW, was also elected unopposed as a new board. member.
More than 700 delegates at the conference in Melbourne, registered across the four education streams for the week, including 30 general managers and assistant general managers for the general managers’ day.
Some1500 attended the two-day trade exhibition, which ran across the middle of the conference week, with more than 100 of the industry’s leading trade companies represented.
Keynote speakers for the week included retired Australian Defence Force Major, Grant Gleeson and former USGA director of championship agronomy, Tim Moraghan who recounted his 20 years preparing golf courses for the US Open.
Other speakers included Ken Mangum from Atlanta Athletic Club, Dr Danesha Seth-Carley (North Carolina State University) and Ed McGawley (Louisiana State University).
Moraghan combined in a presentation with AGCSA general manager, John Neylan and Environmental Business Solutions owner, Terry Muir concerning golf course environmental stewardship and how clubs could offset their carbon footprint. Superintendents, Daryl Sellar (Glenelg Golf Club) and Gary Dempsey (NSW Golf Club) looked at the highly topical issues of staff and time management, while superintendent David Warwick and general manager, Symon Scott from Avondale Golf Club, looked at the dynamics of the superintendent-general manager relationship and strategies to improve understanding on each role
